The drama is set in a post-pandemic Japan in which Variants are persecuted by the public because of their supernatural abilities and struggle against oppression and power. Two teenagers from different backgroundsmake an unexpected connection that unlocks a secret power and together, they are willing to fight for their existence and freedom in an irrational world, despite the odds. The central storyline focuses on a group of persecuted Variants: individuals with unique but minimal powers that range from telekinesis to controlling the elements. They are isolated from society in a settlement called Naraku. Ema (Toko Miura) is a Variant and leader of the influencer unit “L”, which posts videos on social media demanding freedom and social justice for her kind. Umin (Kanichiro) is a Variant who produces fire with his hands, and has become active in the resistance, attracting Ema’s attention. When the two meet at a club, their powers are amplified 1000x and a romantic relationship ensues. Unbeknownst to Ema, Umin is not just a Variant fighting for the cause, but also a double agent, working as a spy for the VCU. As his relationship with Ema deepens, he struggles with deceiving the woman he loves, and betraying his VCU boss Liu, the man who also raised him.

In the near future, after the world war, Japan was in chaos due to the emergence of people with special powers called Variants. Although their abilities were insignificant, the variants were discriminated and persecuted by the public, and were forced into a quarantine area called the “Naraku”.
A young Variant, Umin(Kanichiro), a spy for Captain Liu (Goro Kishitani) of the VCU (VariantCrime Unit), which cracks down on Variants, infiltrates Narakuto investigate Sid (LongMizuma), the face of Naraku, whooperates the video streaming platform MAKUMA. Meanwhile, Emma (TokoMiura), the leader of Naraku’s influencer unit L, spends her days uploading videos to keepthe Variants’ spirits up.
Meanwhile, a video of Yuna (Mizuho Shiromiya), a member of Kumadori, a rough gang in Naraku, being assaulted by the VCU goes viral in Naraku. Emma becomes interested in the mysterious “nameless” account that uploadedthe video and meets Uminat Sid’sclub. Emma realizes that Uminis the owner of the “nameless” account, and the moment she touches hands with Umin, an unbelievable phenomenon occurs between them…! …!

ふたりが手を繋ぐとなぜか強大なヴァリエーション[特殊能力]が生まれることがわかったウミン（寛一郎）とエマ（三浦透子）。エマはこの力があれば奈落を解放できるかもしれないと希望を語る。ウミンは、エマとの力のことを劉（岸谷五朗）に報告できぬまま、奈落内の抵抗勢力でありシド（水間ロン）の元恋人である女に取入れという新たな指令を受ける――その女は、他ならぬエマだった……！再びエマに近づいたウミンは、エマからふたりだけの秘密の力を使ったある計画に協力してほしいと頼まれる。“STAY FREE”と名付けられたエマの計画は、ふたりが有した強大な力を奈落の人々に示し自由を訴えるものだった。匿名でアップされたその動画は、日夜虐げられる奈落の人々の心に火をつけることに成功する。しかし、奈落を管理する“浮世”の知事・英公子（西田尚美）の逆鱗に触れることとなる。そして、エマと手を繋ぐことでウミンのヴァリエーションにも大きな変化が現れ始めていた……。

Umin, unable to report to Liu(Goro Kishitani)about his power with Emma, receives new orders tobringin Sid(LongMizuma)’sformer lover andmember of the resistance in Naraku.The woman was none other than Emma.
When Uminapproaches Emma again, she asks him to help her with a plan using their secret power. Emma’s plan, called “STAY FREE,” is to show the people of Narakuthe power that the two of them possess and appeal for their freedom. The video, uploaded anonymously, succeeds in igniting the hearts of the people of the Naraku, who are oppressed day and night. However, the video upsetsKimiko(Naomi Nishida), the governor of the “Ukiyo” that controls Naraku.

ウミン（寛一郎）は、ヴァリアントの脅威を世に知らしめた“紅事件”の首謀者・赤富士（村上淳）の息子であり、赤富士と同じ呪われた炎のヴァリエーションが眠っていた！幼い頃に棄てられ親の記憶のなかったウミン自身も、その事実に動揺する。しかし「力は使い方次第」と励ましてくれるエマ（三浦透子）の言葉がウミンの心に残る……。一方、“STAY FREE”に触発された者の犯行かVCU殺害事件が発生しており、公子（西田尚美）の子息でヴァリアント差別の権化・英詠一（早乙女太一）VCU管理官が捜査に当たることになる。そんな中、ウミンがスパイだと主張するLのメンバー・花蓮（向里祐香）と口論となるエマ。ウミンを信じたいエマは、親友の花蓮と仲違いしてしまう。一方、ウミンは劉（岸谷五朗）から“STAY FREE”の実行犯について聞かれるが、知らないと嘘をつく。ユナ（白宮みずほ）の仲間であるKUMADORIの晴人（山田健人）は、奈落の宗教団体・宿り木の代表でユナの父親でもあるパク（三浦誠己）導師の元を訪ねていた。“STAY FREE”動画に影響された晴人はユナを救う為、奈落と外の世界を繋ぐ唯一の橋・花道を突破する計画を立てていると告げる……。一方、ウミンと花蓮の間で揺れるエマは、ウミンに味方だと証明して欲しいと迫る――。

Meanwhile, Emma (TokoMiura) gets into an argument with L member Kalen(Yuka Kouri), who claims that Uminis a spy. Emma wants to believe Umin, but she ends up falling out with her best friend Karen. Meanwhile, Uminis asked by Liu (Goro Kishitani) about the STAY FREE perpetrator, but he lies and says he does not know.
Influenced by the STAY FREE video, Haruto (Kento Yamada), Yuna(Mizuho Shiromiya) ’s fellow Kumadori, is visiting Guru Park (Masaki Miura), the head of the religious group Yadorikiand father of Yuna, in Naraku. He tells himthat he is planning to break through Hanamichi, the only bridge between Narakuand the outside world to save Yuna.
Meanwhile, Emma, who is torn between Uminand Karen, presses Uminto prove that he is not a spy.

宿り木のデモに扮し花道突破を試みるKUMADORIの晴人（山田健人）たちとVCUが衝突し、多数の死傷者が出る……！同時に管理官・詠一（早乙女太一）の機転によって、連続VCU殺害事件の犯人が炙り出される。信者としてデモに参加していた花蓮（向里祐香）も騒動に巻き込まれたことを知ったエマ（三浦透子）が現場に急行するが、花蓮の姿はすでにそこにはなかった……。花蓮を失い大きなショックを受けるエマ。塞ぎ込み、花蓮の幻聴に悩まされるエマを連れ出したのは、かつての恋人・シド（水間ロン）だった。シドは忠告のためエマにある写真を見せる――それは、ウミン（寛一郎）がVCUの劉（岸谷五朗）と話し込む写真だった……！エマに問い詰められても、任務のため嘘を貫き通そうとするウミン。しかし、エマの最後の一言によって、劉への忠誠か、エマたちヴァリアントへの連帯かどちらかを選ばざるを得なくなる。一方、知事・公子（西田尚美）は花道暴動の現場で撮影されていた動画に映るウミンとエマの姿に目を止める……公子と詠一親子にも、何か隠し続けている秘密があるようで――。

One day, Kimiko meets a lonely young Variantnamed Munakata(Kentaro Tomita) and becomes embroiled in events that will change the rest of her life—. Asecret that has been hidden from generation to generationby Kimiko, and the Hanabusafamily, is revealed.
Meanwhile, Umin, who betrayed Emma, wonders if he made the right choice.
Emma is taken away and ends up in a mysterious huge facility called “Rakuen”.

処刑されたと思われていた赤富士（村上淳）は、楽園の最深部で生きていた……！楽園に囚われていたヴァリアントたちの反乱に紛れ、衰弱し切った父親を連れ楽園を脱出するウミン（寛一郎）たち。ウミンとエマ（三浦透子）のヴァリエーションによって意識を失っていた劉（岸谷五朗）は、幼いウミンを拾い育ててきた日々を思い出していた――そこには、厳しい主従関係だけではない何かがあった。目を覚ました劉は、ウミンたちの後を追う。追手をやり過ごすため、廃墟に身を潜めることにしたウミンたち。会えることはないと思っていた父・赤富士との時間に戸惑いを隠せないウミン。そんなウミンに、赤富士は紅事件の真相について語り始める。あの事件の裏側には、今も解明されていないヴァリアント誕生の謎が関わっていた……。衝撃の事実を知ったウミンとエマは、問題を解決するため再び奈落に戻る決意をする。そんな彼らの命を狙い現れたのは、最凶のヴァリアント差別主義者であり、ウミンの実兄、VCU管理官の詠一（早乙女太一）だった――！

Uminand his friends decide to hide out in an abandoned building to avoid their pursuers. Umincannot hide hisconfusion with hisfather, Akafuji, whom he thought he would never see again. Akafuji begins to tell Uminabout the truth behind the Red Incident. Behind the RedIncidentliesthe mystery of the birth of Variants, which has not beensolved.
After learning the shocking truth, Umin and Emma decide to return to Naraku. Yet,aiming for their lives, is the deadliest Variantracist,Umin’s brother, VCU Superintendent Eiichi (Taichi Saotome)!

奈落では年に一度の祭典・フリードニアがはじまった。お祭りムードで賑わう奈落だったが、今年は例年とは違っていた。国の決定権を持つ議会中枢は、このイベントを利用し、奈落を新たなヴァリアント研究施設――言わば第二の“楽園”に仕立て上げようと目論んでいた……！すべてを計画した黒幕は、ヴァリアントの味方だと目されていたシド（水間ロン）だった。劉（岸谷五朗）の協力を得て奈落に戻ったウミン（寛一郎）とエマ（三浦透子）たちは、長年人々を騙し続けている議会の悪事を公表するため、シドに協力を仰いでしまう……。エマたちの計画を知ったシドは、それに賛同するふりをして逆に自分の計画に組み込むことを企てる。エマと別れ、議会の不正の証拠を取りに行ったウミンの元にも、シドの刺客が現れウミンは絶体絶命に陥ってしまう――。一方、エマはフリードニアの会場で、陽毬（阿部久令亜）とLのメンバーと再会を果たし、二度と離れないときつく抱き合う。そして、その時がやってくる。理不尽を受け入れてきた奈落のヴァリアントたちを救済するために、自分たちの過ちを隠蔽するため差別を容認する議会を糾弾するために、エマはすべてのヴァリアントたちの運命を背負い、大観衆のフリードニアの舞台に立つ――。果たして、シドの謀略に気づいたウミンはエマを守ることができるのか――？エマが願った奈落の解放は実現するのか――？
The annual festival, Freedonia, hasbegun in Naraku. Narakuis in a festive mood, but this year is different from previous years. “Ｌ”のメンバーで、広報兼メイク担当。奈落の宗教団体・宿り木の信者。エマとは一番付き合いが古い親友。元々は引っ込み思案で自分の意見すら言えないような人間だったが、エマと出会ったことで、そんな自分を卒業できたためエマを慕っている。エマやLのことになると、周りが見えなくなってしまう節がある。
